PR: There are planets dying over the universe because their core went cold and for some reason is your job to fix it. Even more amusingly, you can fix it by dropping a bomb near the center of the planet, disregarding all possible underlying problems such as, say, the star of the system is dying. Maybe drop a bomb on the star too?
Seemingly, the core having gone cold means no problem to the local insectoid fauna and they decide to assault your operation in increasing numbers, meaning that there's a timer for you to reach the core and complete the mission, but for what I could see this isn't really a problem.
Rather the problem is that your miners/carriers are extremely prone to dying, be it a block of sand you didn't see, a steam propelled lime block, a void thing that instapops them too, and of course the aliens that can spawn if you don't mine their spawners quickly enough. There are dedicated "guard" units to counter this last bit but they're quite useless both in killing the alien, not dying themselves and preventing the other units death, it's better to get more miners and dig up the spawner quicker.
Frankly, this part of the game made me quit. It's so annoying to be forced into micromanaging every single action in what's basically a quick time event that leads to you having to create more units which is also annoying because the crafting queue caps at one. So, it's like you have to pay attention to when it's done so as to craft another. Whenever my miners suffered a dumb death I was more annoyed to the idea of having to craft them one by one than the actual material loss.
The "defense" part is just spamming the most expensive turret that you have available, praying you get defense BPs before getting special enemies. There's little strategy other than the obvious, like maybe don't use that turret that doesn't deal damage unless it's to complement a really powerful one.
The active skills plainly suck, hardly worth the cost, and they all last a laughable short amount of time. I don't want to micro manage yet another thing for a 2 second boost, thanks.
After a couple runs I manage to unlock the dwarf platform, but it's basically the same only that worse because everything is more expensive, which by the way, the meta is also obscenely expensive for things that barely impact.
Overall, a very grindy game that's basically a worse dome keeper, having the mechanics but uglier, grindier and less satisfying, which is particularly negative considering that dome keeper was made by two people and it's half the price of Drill Core, which was developed by more than ten people.
